Most of us are so connected to our devices, it’s like we’re one with our phones. But what if taking a single minute in the morning before plugging into the digital demands of the day could set you up for a more blissful existence?
Countless experts say it can.
Those bleary, dreamy moments when you first wake up are among the quietest and most receptive of your day. Once you’re done hitting snooze and have turned off the alarm, treat yourself to a calming, grounding, soul-boosting morning minute.
It’s easy, and it really only takes a minute (though if you can spare five, go for it).
The hardest part is not reaching for the phone or checking all the alerts that beckon after building up overnight. Just silence the alarm, set that phone aside for one minute, and tune into you.
Allow yourself 60 seconds to just BE. Awaken to the new day. Appreciate the warm, safe snuggliness of your bed. Give your body a stretch. Allow your eyes to acclimate. Is sunshine peeking into the room? What sounds can you hear? Maybe your sweetheart or furbaby is beside you. Take a second to let yourself feel happy and grateful for that connection.
Once you’re up and out of bed, chances are you’ll be on the go for the next dozen hours. That’s why just after waking up is the perfect time to allow yourself a minute to just exist. Even the busiest among us have 60 seconds to indulge in the miracle that we are alive. That we exist before plugging in. Take one minute without distraction to stretch, breathe, relax.
Maybe that minute will one day grow into a full-fledged morning routine, like so many entrepreneurs and gurus credit as key to their thriving. But even if all you have time for is a single minute — especially if you only have time for a single minute — spending it quietly tuning into yourself will be infinitely more calming and grounding than anything your phone can offer.
